In the heart of town near the famous bathhouse row and across from the Arlington Hotel, the World of Wax has stood for decades. It is home to an extensive display of figure from history and the Southern Club Gambling Museum.
The building itself was the home of the Southern Club built in 1894 and home of a casino that was one of the most active in the nation for several decades. The building was built as an impressive edifice adorned with arches on the first and second levels. To this day the arches on the second floor have survived refurbishments to the structure over the years.
The Southern Club Casino was a favorite of such noted criminals as Al Capone, Bugs Moran, Lucky Luciano and Owney "The Killer" Maddon. Al Capon was such a regular visitor that he had his own suite in the Arlington equipped with a hidden room which houses a stairway and entrance to a hidden tunnel under the street to the casino that allowed home to come and go unseen.
The gambling museum displays an impressive collection of paraphernalia that would have been found in the casino at its full swing. There two areas in the wax exhibits that the collection can be seen. The first is an original restroom adorned in heavy marble. Also located in this first section is a roulette table used in the casino.
In the second area of the collection located in Fantasy Land are displayed dice, decks of cards, slot machines and a card table from the casino itself. There is a looping audio tour that describes the items in the display that is only a few minutes long. Wait at the beginning of the glass enclosed cabinets until you here the items before you described. The tour in that particular room ends with a look out the window of damage from a landslide that destroyed a sizeable portion of the building in the early 1960s. Much of the landslide was dug up to get to $5 million in silver and cash buried in a safe belonging to the owners.
To become acquainted with the history of Hot Springs, Arkansas requires a visit to this peculiar piece of history.
